2 Days Exploring Haunted Key West

In 1521, when Ponce de Leon and his crew discovered Key West, they called it “Cayo Hueso”. Translation: “Bone Key”. The island was literally covered with bones before being cleared out and built on. Every structure standing in Key West today has been built on what once was a mass burial ground. Is it really any wonder why so many places are reportedly haunted? Key West is home to locations rich with history of a dark variety but still beautiful to behold. This itinerary will take you to such places. Here are just a few examples of the variety of sites you’ll see: Civil War era Forts: Peaceful cemeteries: A charming lighthouse: A doll, said to be possessed: There are a variety of guided tours offered throughout Key West, only a few that will share all of the haunting tales the island is littered with. You can explore on your own or with an organized tour group, the choice is yours. This itinerary gives you the information needed to take either route. Whether you’re a paranormal enthusiast or a history buff, you’ll enjoy the information this guide has to offer.

3 Day PA Dutch Country Highlights (Lancaster County, PA)

Lancaster County is an eclectic mix of old and new world, city and country, Amish and "English". It is an ideal place to visit for art-lovers, die-hard shoppers, historians, antique junkies, or the curious! This itinerary will allow you to experience the following. The Amish and Mennonite Communities Most people know about Lancaster County, Pennsylvania because the highest population of Amish people in the world live here. Yes it is true that the Amish do not use electricity, ride in horse-and-buggies, speak their own German dialect called Pennsylvania Dutch, and allow teenagers of a certain age to "sow their wild oats" and break the rules just to try it out. And no, the Amish do not live in compounds or separated from "The English" (what the Amish call everyone who is not Amish!). Although Lancaster is unique because of its Amish and Mennonite roots, there is so much more to see and do than marvel at the "plain" communities. Interesting Local Food If you are a foodie, you will find Lancaster County a very interesting place to be. Locals have been buying, well....'local' long before it became trendy. This means you can pick up delicious locally grown or canned fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, or home-brewed root beer at the farmer's markets or road-side stands that dot the countryside. Additionally, you can try Lancaster County specialties like whoopie pies, shoo-fly pie, ham loaf, or scrabble for the brave! This itinerary includes great specialty food places like the first pretzel bakery in the country and one of the first chocolate factories (in the same tiny town!), a farm-to-table restaurant that only serves organic and locally-sourced food, and a visit to a smorgasbord. If Amish baked goods, cleverly crafted local dishes, and the largest buffet you have ever seen is not doing it for you, Lancaster County also offers fabulous local beers and wines. Theater and the Arts Interestingly, Lancaster city and surrounding areas have become a hub for the fine arts a

3 Days as an Istanbulite: An Istanbul Itinerary

I have had many friends visit me from abroad and I have taken them on tours of Istanbul many times. In this itinerary, I have written up a three-day tour of Istanbul very similar to the ones I have taken with my friends. This itinerary is designed to be the perfect introduction to Istanbul for the first time visitor. The itinerary takes you to the iconic historical sites and shows you the many faces of Beyoğlu, the cultural heart of the city. It ends with a relaxing tour of the Bosphorus, so you can soak up the beauty of the scenery before you leave! I have included the "must-see" highlights like the Blue Mosque in the historical peninsula. That's not all though, the itinerary is packed with many experiences locals enjoy, like enjoying a kumpir in Ortaköy. Istanbul is a big city and it has a long past. It has been the seat of power for two world empires: the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empires. It has been a crossing point between continents and cultures throughout history. As you can imagine, there is A LOT to see and experience and three days are not nearly enough for all. This itinerary will help you by pointing out the most interesting things to see and it will help you locate them with maps and photos. By the end of the three days, you will have experienced the history, the cultural scene, and the scenic beauty of Istanbul. You will also have a wonderful culinary experience through my lunch/dinner suggestions throughout the three days. The itinerary is centered around walking tours. While the distances walked are not huge and while I have planned many opportunities for taking breaks, you will be walking around a lot. I would like to point this out for travelers who may have difficulty with mobility. I recommend reading the Appendix section BEFORE you arrive in Istanbul. By doing so, you will avoid any surprises and be ready to employ the tips and tricks included in this section. I even have some literary suggestions in this section; reading the suggested books wi

Rome is one of the premier travel destinations in the world, and for good reason. The city is teaming with iconic sights ranging from renaissance art to ancient ruins to modern monuments. Many visitors also assume that they can't afford to see Rome's top attractions and enjoy its world-class cuisine. The truth is, however, that Rome's best food is not its most expensive and its most famous attractions are affordable as well. This itinerary is designed to help travellers see all of Rome's top sights and experience authentic and delicious Roman cuisine on a limited budget and with limited time. To maximize our limited time, each day will be full of activities - and walking.

A 1-Day Foodie's Dream Tour of Arequipa

This isn't a Peruvian food tour—this is an Arequipeño food tour. The Andean city, Peru's second-largest, is known for its traditional gastronomy, which means you're basically guaranteed to never find these dishes anywhere else in the world. They're represented by a unique blend of Andean spices and European flair, crispy pork skins, local fruits, spicy peppers, doughy desserts, and potatoes served every way you could imagine. Don't expect ceviche or lomo saltado on this tour; the goal is to stick to what's local whenever possible, including historic institutions and mainstay dishes. This simple one-day walking tour will take you through the city's gorgeously preserved colonial downtown and through the beautiful lookout of nearby Yanahuara, all while making sure you're eating Arequipa's best offerings. We also eschew most of the conventional top-rated TripAdvisor restaurants—they're expensive touristy nonsense, and not really representative of the city's decades-old purveyors of desserts, coffee, and soups. If you want the real deal, read on. What will you eat in Arequipa? A complete 12-hour itinerary—two breakfasts, lunch, and dinner, with desserts and drinks in between. The best spots for local specialties such as rocoto relleno , chupe de camarones, and adobo. Unique local twists on South American classics, including Arequipeño tamales and lime-spiced empanadas. Hand-rolled tea leaves, acclaimed coffee, craft beer, and the best spots for Andean corn beer, chicha. Desserts abound: clove-spiced ice cream, sugar-dusted alfajores, and freshly fried buñuelos . What does this Arequipa itinerary include? Restaurants and food stalls you won't find on Lonely Planet—some don't even have addresses. A good balance of popular (though authentic) restaurants along with places where you're guaranteed to be the only foreigner. The city's one restaurant that must not be missed. A guide to local ingredients, meal etiquette, and gastronomic history. The best times to eat to avoid the

Discover Mont St Michel: 2-Night Stay

The Abbey of Mont St Michel receives over 3 million visitors annually. There is a way when you first approach the Abbey, your mind cannot comprehend how such a 'rock' could last over the centuries. Perhaps that is why it is called by many, the 8th Wonder of the World. It sits in The Baie du Mont St Michel -- an area of French coastline that is alongside the waters of the English Channel. Terrific storms and gale force winds roar through here. The tides are some of the highest in the world. Construction? Began in the 900s and it is over 1,000 years old. It is said when the tides move in, it sounds like the thunder of horses ... the Abbey becomes isolated and completely surrounded by water ... and people come to BE on the rock for this experience. It is magic. You can find high tide calendars online but do know to be isolated on 'the rock' you'll need to book a year ahead! Others like to 'pilgrimage' across the sands from the continent -- this is available with a guide who knows the waters and the shifting sands. It is magnetic for too many reasons to count -- and the region is spectacular, from gastronomic fare scattered across the countryside to historical wonders. We have lived in the Baie du Mont St Michel for over 14 years. We've watched the rhythm, the ebb and flow of the tides, the locals, the tourists, and the accommodations that fill and empty seasonally ... We've listened to stories of people who come from far away just to see the splendor of the Mont ... others who come for a quick weekend from the UK ... all who come are drawn for a dozen reasons. Whatever that draw is for you, discover the bounty of this region. If you are wanting to visit Mont St Michel, perhaps on its own for an extended stay or for an overnight -- or coming off the Normandy Beaches (1.5 hours away) it will not disappoint. With my tour you can choose between 2-3 suggested accommodations, hire a private guide for the Abbey (she is fluent French, German, and English), eat well, and sleep

A Day on Lake Como, Italy

With the shape of a large capsized 'y', Lake Como, fed by the river Adda, is considered one of the most picturesque pre-alpine lakes of Lombardy, in Northern Italy. Como, located on the western end of the lake, framed by the mountains, is a pretty town with an ancient history. This itinerary “Como: A Day on the Lake” is organized in two parts to take advantage of the day as much as possible. In the morning, a short trip with the ferry boat on the line “Navigazione Laghi” will allow you to discover the first part of the western shore of the lake, punctuated with charming villages with little Romanesque churches and luxurious villas overlooking the lake. You can get off at two stops and have time to immerse yourself in the typical atmosphere of the lake. We have chosen two very different villages, Moltrasio and Cernobbio, to help you discover both a place a bit off the beaten track and one of the most touristic resorts on the lake. In the afternoon, you can go back to Como and have a walk in the historical center of this ancient city, discovering its numerous monuments as well as some of its more typical products. The programme of the day has been carefully planned so that you can see the most interesting attractions as if you were accompanied by a local guide and have time to enjoy the magnificent views of the lake. Arequipa - A 2-Day Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Arequipa is Peru's second largest city but despite its size, the colonial core is compact and easily walkable, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. From the imposing cathedral to the many historic mansions, the building material of choice is sillar, a white stone quarried from the lower slopes of the nearby volcanoes. The most famous of these is El Misti, which has provided a commanding backdrop to many a photograph. Unsurprisingly, Arequipeños are fiercely proud of their city and its long history. Founded back in 1540, the city has such a strong identity that other Peruvians claim you need a different passport to get in. In reality, it's an easy flight from Lima or Cusco and the perfect addition to a Peruvian vacation. It's the perfect city in which to linger. Admire the Baroque carvings on the plentiful stone mansions, take a stroll around the vividly coloured Santa Catalina Convent or go and visit Juanita, sacrificed by the Incas over five centuries ago but only discovered in 1995. Go in June to watch the city's schools and clubs take over the main square to create artworks in sand and flowers for Corpus Christi or time your visit to coincide with the festivities celebrating Arequipa Day in mid-August. The city has a thriving restaurant scene, which will delight foodies, offering local specialties like Rocoto Relleno (spicy stuffed peppers), Chupe de Camarones (shrimp stew), and Queso Helado (frozen cheese). Numerous cafes and bars invite you to while away your time relaxing and chatting with friends. One thing's for certain, in the place that calls itself the city of the eternal spring, you won't want to leave. This two-day itinerary provides the perfect introduction to this delightful city for a first-time visitor. It points you to the city's main sights, leading you around the historic centre, uncovering the best views, and showing you where to catch a colectivo to get out into the surrounding countryside. Whether you only have a couple of days before head

Baltimore: A Harbor, Parks, History, Seafood & Art - 3-Day Itinerary

Welcome to Baltimore, Maryland! Or, as locals call it, “Bawlmore, Merlin.” Get ready to immerse yourself in the blend of a diverse city full of quirky surprises and deep historical roots. Baltimore, the central hub of The Old Line State, is a symbolic bridge of the north and south division—and home of the Orioles and Ravens—offering a unique combination of urban culture and welcoming hospitality. The city’s rich art scene can have you museum hopping for days. From the 40,000 displayed works at the Walter’s Art Museum to a taste of creativity’s more eccentric side at the American Visionary Arts Museum, there is a plethora of treasures to uncover. Any native will tell you that the first dish to try is crabs—preferably very well seasoned with Old Bay spice. With this guide, you’ll get clued on the best spots to grab a bite, looking over the Inner Harbor or with the neighborhood locals, enjoy the city’s hip music scene, or—if you’re in the mood for something spooky—see a ghost in downtown Fells Point, former hangout spot of Edgar Allen Poe, Babe Ruth, and Frederick Douglass. Visit once, visit often. Pack a pair of comfortable shoes—along with a sense of adventure—and explore the city on foot or bike. Belgrade: 7 Days of History on Foot

You live on the edge, have a penchant for strange history and you're the hippest cat around. Let's face it, big crowds of tourists aren't your thing but a beer with a local is, then it's off to Belgrade for you my friend. You've read some books and you've taken some classes, but you won't know the history of Belgrade until you've seen it with your own eyes. This is the tour for you. Student? Wandering artist? Budget traveler? No worries, every site is either free or under $5. A city divided not just by the convergence of the Danube, but by the ideology of the people. At least that is how this former Yugoslav capital is portrayed in the media, but how could the media qualify a city with over a thousand years of history? Each neighborhood in the eclectic metropolis stands as an emblem to Belgrade’s past: whether it is the commandeered communist structures, the Ottoman Empire neighborhood of Dorchol, the old Austro-Hungarian village of Zemun, WWII occupation or the ruins of NATO bombings, the city stands as a meeting point between the deceased empires of East and West. This itinerary will give you a skeleton plan for a history-themed walking tour through the “White City.” Remember that Belgrade’s history is built upon itself and to get some perspective on the realities of what’s happened here, you must leave the beaten path from time to time; because much of the beauty history left behind is displayed to the public, but the more recent stories of the city’s people is spray-painted on the walls down side streets, or discussed in kafanas over rakija. So, some itinerary days will give you the grand tour, while others will lead you down the road less traveled. And perhaps, after the tour, you’ll be able to understand the complexities of living in a world where a turbulent past is a present reality. Almost every attraction is free or under $5. Before starting your tour, remember that there are two things that Serbia is famous for: its food and its people; take time with the

Best of Warsaw 2-Day Itinerary

Most tourists just pass Warsaw by on their way to splendid Cracow or the charming seaport Gdansk. They listen to opinions of many Poles who say their capital is ugly. Well guess what, IT'S NOT TRUE! :) Warsaw may not be the most beautiful city in Poland, but it certainly is the most interesting, not only in our country but in the whole of Central Europe! Young, creative, hipster, with thriving culture, dozens of festivals, crowded pubs on every corner, and quiet places to hide from the city buzz. Did you know that Warsaw is the only capital in Europe with an unregulated river shore? Instead of concrete, Paris-like coast, you have nice, yellow-sand beaches and wild bushes around them with some magical places to see the sunset. If you want to experience the real Warsaw , and understand why locals love it so much , this itinerary is for you! You cannot feel the city spirit without knowing about it's tragic past. Did you know that in early 1945 there were only about 1000 inhabitants living in the ruins of what used to be a 1 million person city? We do not like to talk about it too often, but this is the reason that we believe our city is unique. But don't worry about the history, our itinerary is well balanced between past, present, and future. :) I recommend the best touristic spots, favored especially by Warsovians, the most popular clubs, and eateries. Not too many museums, no churches – you can find them in any typical guidebook. Following the route provided, after two days you'll feel in Warsaw like at home. This itinerary is for anybody's pocket, as Poles are very good in money saving. :) Although as every capital, Warsaw is more expensive than other cities in Poland, it's still very cheap compared to the West. So, you want to get to know Boston. Not a formal handshake, but an in-depth conversation. "Hi, Boston! Tell me about yourself." You know that it is the birthplace of so much of United States history -- Paul Revere's midnight ride, the Boston Tea Party, the Great Molasses Flood of 1919. You didn't know about that last one? That's why you need this insider's guided itinerary. Maybe you don't think of yourself as the history buff type, but if you saw Paul Revere's house you would get excited to see the actual place he lived. You can be any age, with kids or without, student or not... Best of all, this itinerary fits any budget. Groups, couples, individuals, families - I've included tips just for you. This self-guided walking tour will take you around the best of Boston and Cambridge. It does not simply follow the Freedom Trail, but goes off of it to experience all of the greatest monuments and meals Boston has to offer. Sights include: Paul Revere's House Massachusetts State House Faneuil Hall Charles River Old City Hall Copley Square Boston Harbor Harvard University Old North Church USS Constitution and more... all in 2 days! The tour is heavy on walking because it is the best way to experience the city. Everything is close together and the narrow streets wind around in a way that would make you wish you were walking if you did have a car. If this physically isn't possible for you, taxis and subway can be substituted in many cases. (There is one taxi ride and one subway ride built in to Day 2.) Restaurant recommendations, historical background, and insider tips are all included. Maybe you've heard you should go to the North End area for Italian pastries, but you don't know where or what to get. Maybe you know that Copley Square is a major plaza of Boston, but you don't know what to look at when you're there. This itinerary I've prepared for you can help. I lived in four different neighborhoods of Boston between 2004 and 2012 and I have been regularly visiting my famil

Cancun and Mayan Riviera 5-Day Itinerary (4th Edition)

Updated May 2018 Most famous for Cancun, the Mayan Riviera is Mexico's travel wonderland, a jungle coastline of white-sand beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, laid-back colonial towns, and cenotes—the crystal-clear, freshwater sinkholes found throughout the flat limestone sponge of the Yucatán Peninsula. Many visitors stay at a resort in Cancun. These all-inclusive monstrosities can be a good deal. You'll be right on the beach, have a pool, get unlimited food and drinks, and all-in-all have a fun, relaxing vacation. But even if the package includes some tours, you won't get to know Mexico. How could you? Why would you venture away from the beach for some real tacos when you have a free buffet in your luxury hotel? Why would you travel inland for some culture in colonial Valladolid when the pool party starts at 10 a.m. every day? Although Cancun is known for big resorts and mass tourism, and formerly lesser-known beach hangouts like Playa del Carmen are now firmly established on the beaten path, a budget-conscious side remains in these world-class tourist destinations. You can still get a nice hotel room for less than $30 USD in downtown Cancun or a few blocks from the beach in Playa del Carmen. And for the best, most authentic regional food—what the locals eat—you'll pay less than at McDonald’s. What is an Unanchor travel guide itinerary? Each Unanchor travel guide is an itinerary that includes a detailed timeline of places to visit with maps and directions, along with insider tips and alternative destinations. It's like having a personal tour guide in your pocket, but with freedom to deviate from the plan and at a much lower cost. Where does your itinerary for Cancun and the Mayan Riviera take you? This itinerary is written for the independent traveler who likes the beach but also wants some culture. Besides saving a lot of money, you will: Have two full days on two gorgeous beaches: Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Explore two Mayan ruins: Chichén Itzá, one of the new Seven

Cusco and the Sacred Valley - a five-day itinerary for a first-time visitor

Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, is Peru's top visitor destination. Around two million foreign visitors travel to this part of South America annually, with numbers steadily growing year on year. Aside from nearby Machu Picchu, the jewel in Peru's tourist crown by some considerable margin, there are enough historic and cultural attractions in the Cusco area to keep visitors occupied for weeks. Cusco, with its colonial architecture set around characterful squares, warrants a whole trip in itself. The historic city is centred on the bustling Plaza de Armas. The imposing cathedral and its tiny neighbour, the Iglesia del Triunfo, face off against the Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, built by the Jesuits to rival their Catholic counterpart. The most important temple of the Inca Empire, Koricancha, occupies a prime location on Avenida El Sol, just a short walk from the plaza. Neighbourhoods such as San Blas, with steep cobbled streets packed with cafes, bars and galleries, have much to delight tourists. Higher still, exploring the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, with its enormous blocks of stone and impressive Inca engineering, is a must on every visitor's itinerary. But that's not all. Cusco is a short drive away from the Sacred Valley, crammed full of Inca archaeological sites amidst stunning highland scenery. The agricultural terraces and storehouses of Ollantaytambo offer a fascinating glimpse into the everyday life of the Incas. The valley is settled and farmed to this day and the bustling markets at Pisac and Chinchero draw thousands seeking the perfect souvenir to take home. Therein lies the problem: there's so much to see that careful planning is essential. Knowing what to leave out and what not to miss is crucial to making the best of your time here. Lesser known attractions such as the circular terraces of the Inca’s agricultural laboratory at Moray or the incredible salt pans, the Salineras de Maras, are often overlooked as the tour buses hurtle pas

Delhi in 3 Days - A Journey Through Time

Delhi is the capital of the largest democracy in the world. With a population of 16 million (and growing), Delhi can be overwhelming to a first time visitor. Therefore, my advice is to go gentle on your first day so that you can take in the essence of Delhi – its sound (which will be loud to the point of ear drum bursting), smell and visuals. Delhi is a very spread out city with chaotic traffic, so you have to plan your Delhi trip in such a way that you cover a lot in the limited time that you have. I normally divide it into South Delhi, central Delhi and Old Delhi. You cannot easily plan your Delhi trip hour-by-hour because getting from one place to the next can take you an hour or maybe more, depending on the traffic, any VIP movement, festival or religious processions. Here’s a proposed itinerary to help you out.

Go with the Sun to Borobudur & Prambanan in 1 Day

This itinerary describes a full day of sightseeing in Yogyakarta on Java Island in Indonesia. Three of the main attractions in the city, Borobudur, Prambanan temples and Mount Merapi, are packed together in a fantastic day's journey. You will be taken from the city of Yogyakarta through sunrise at the majestic temple of Borobudur, to the high altitude view of the most active volcano in Indonesia, Mount Merapi, relaxing in cool temperatures for lunch during the heat of the mid-day under the volcano, and finish off with sunset, dinner, and traditional ballet at Prambanan Temple. It is a long but spectacular day where you will see fantastic landscapes, beautifully terraced rice fields and a bustling street life of all the colors of the rainbow.

The three days spent exploring the city showcase the best in Irish history, architecture, culture, food, and drink. Drink with the locals, taste real Irish cuisine and see the areas of the city where historic events happened. See both the best of the city and the beautiful Irish natural landscape. Johannesburg/Pretoria: A 4-Day South Africa Tour Itinerary

This 4-day journey into the Gauteng Province of South Africa is designed to introduce you, the visitor, to the culture and people who make South Africa a magical and fascinating country. We will take you to the museums and monuments which pay tribute to former President Nelson Mandela and the end of an Apartheid government, which ruled the country by division of the races and had tried, convicted, and sentenced Mandela to life imprisonment. The many commemorations of this struggle make it clear that South Africa is free today thanks to their sacrifices and that the people of South Africa are grateful and proud of their new freedom. You will also see how Johannesburg got its start during the discovery of gold, how it's mined, and what life was like in the early days. You will visit the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site which traces our human lineage back some 3 million years through museum exhibits, archaeological sites, and a trip into the caves where historic discoveries were made. You will have the opportunity to visit and spend a night in the Lesedi Cultural Village, an authentic cluster of South African tribes who share their lifestyle, their song and dance, their cuisine, and themselves with you in an evening of magic followed by a comfortable and affordable overnight stay. A trip to Pretoria will introduce you to the administrative capital of South Africa with its monuments and tributes to the Boers, who settled the area and fought the British, lived under their domination, and fought again until they were successful at bringing together a unified Republic of South Africa. The last day will bring you face to face with South African culture at its finest and its poorest. From Sandton to Alexandra you will experience a taste of the opulence on one side of the street and the abject poverty on the other side (literally!) with a local, well-known, and respected personal guide who will arrange for a special afternoon and evening with an Alexandran family. La Grange, Kentucky: A 3-Day Tour Itinerary

You might not think a small town can offer three days' worth of activities. La Grange, Kentucky, however, is a multifaceted and historic town that appeals to train spotters, horse lovers, artists, antique freaks, gardeners, golfers, anglers, hikers, and sports fans. Located just 25 miles east of downtown Louisville and 75 miles southwest of Cincinnati along I-71, this town can provide you with gorgeous accommodations, great local eateries, and plenty to see and do without ever setting foot in Louisville (unless you stay with us for the Kentucky Derby). We developed this guide with three objectives in mind: To inform you about the best things to see and do in and around La Grange, Kentucky, along with some options for activities you may not know existed in Oldham County. To enlighten you about some La Grange history and habits. To inform you on the best and least expensive ways to enjoy activities around La Grange. This guide is designed for physically active people as well as for foodies and shopaholics. It's a great town to enjoy with friends, with your partner, or with the entire family (La Grange is very kid friendly). Feel free to use the Appendix to mix and match your activities. For instance, if you prefer to spend all day on a horse, feel free to do so. Or, if you want to expand on your fishing or golfing plans, we can make suggestions about opportunities within a half-hour's drive. The first day focuses on trains, as La Grange is a rare bird when it comes to the train track embedded in downtown's Main Street. Unlike other towns that grew around railroad hubs, La Grange existed before the first wood-burning steam engines chugged onto La Grange's Main Street in the 1850s. Today, no passenger trains run the rails from Louisville to Cincinnati, as CSX now owns the tracks and uses them for cargo. With that said, train spotters and rail fans from around the world come to La Grange to photograph and film this spectacle. La Grange is the only town outside Oakland, C

MADchester - A Local's 3-Day Guide To Manchester

England's second city both in terms of its size and cultural influence, Manchester is the city that has inspired generations both past and present. The centre of the industrial revolution in the 19th Century, Manchester has always been innovative. The home of the world's first passenger railway station, this is the city where the atom was first split, where Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote the Communist Manifesto and where the first modern computer was developed. In modern day, it has become the music capital of the nation, with artists such as Oasis, The Stone Roses and The Smiths calling the city home. Perhaps best known internationally for its leading football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester the city have dominated the English Premier League, between them winning the competition 14 times since its inception 21 years ago. Yet in spite of its historical contributions, Manchester is a city that looks forward rather than back. Modern glass buildings intertwine with historical points of significance. This itinerary takes you on a journey through the past, straight through the modern day and beyond. You will learn of the history of this fascinating city and discover how Manchester was at the forefront of forming the world we live in today.

Málaga, Spain – 2-Day Tour from the Moors to Picasso

UPDATED FOR 2015. Details include the brand new galleries - The Pompidou and The Russian Museum - which are helping to really put Málaga on the map. Málaga is one of the oldest cities in the world with its history dating back to the Phoenicians in the eighth century BCE. It is an elegant, vibrant and interesting city and has been the home and birthplace of many famous people including Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas. Are you a lover of art and history? Then this is the itinerary for you! The itinerary focuses on the area around the port and the old town of Málaga. Day One takes in the east side and Day Two the west side. With open displays shown in a Moorish-influenced old tavern, you get to see the Málaga of yesteryear for only 4 Euros.. New Haven Highlights: Art, Culture & History 3-Day Itinerary

New Haven, also known as the Elm City , is called the "cultural capitol of Connecticut" for a good reason: a long-standing commitment to the arts that continues to flourish in the 21st century. This itinerary is geared towards those who like to experience art, culture and history up close and personal -- there are no expensive entrance fees here, and you don't have to be a Yale student to know where the best art -- and coffee -- is. New Haven is a small coastal city waiting to be explored on foot or on bike. Having a car will make things easier for spin-off sites, but the public bus system can serve this need too. Smack dab between New York City and Boston, directly on I-95 and accessible from the Merritt Parkway, Amtrak and Metro-North, New Haven is easy to get to and offers a great array of art, culture and history in a small space. From traditional and incomparable British and European paintings, to the science of paleontology to the contemporary art scene, there is something for everyone in New Haven. The Elm City's history goes back 375 years and there are historic sites of religious, civic, archaeological and architectural significance to see as well. This itinerary also offers great places to take coffee or tea and have lunch and dinner because visitors need to stop to refuel -- and reflect on their discoveries. Due to its combination of "town" and "gown" sensibilities, there are significant historic food traditions like New Haven pizza, but also the international flavors of the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and East Asia are found here in abundance too. Add to all of this plenty of places to shop, attend the theater or a music performance and I think you'll find that New Haven really is the perfect small city. Welcome to the Elm City!

Paris to Chartres Cathedral: 1-Day Tour Itinerary

There is something about Chartres… I’ve been coming and going to Chartres for over twenty years now. I know the streets, the tuckaways, the tourist grabbers, and what not to miss. For many people, Chartres is still a well-kept secret, although the people who are discovering it year by year grow in number. Perhaps the most well-preserved Gothic cathedral on Earth, Chartres is a one-hour train ride south of Paris and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Consider a breakaway from Paris for the day...you don't need a car in Chartres! Or better yet, wrap a weekend around one full day dedicated to taking in the splendor, grace, and beauty of Chartres. With hindsight, you may just want to come again! Here, you will stand as witness to beauty everywhere; from how the cathedral itself is the binding for the book of glass... to how ancient artisans laid their finest work in every turn over centuries – but left no mark... to turning around and facing an ancient wall that has been maintained and nurtured throughout the centuries, leaving you gawking in awe. And the glass? It simply takes your breath away. It's true; I love Chartres. But so can you. This is a small, bourgeoning, walkabout, medieval city with the Cathédrale du Notre Dame de Chartres at its heart. It is a perfect place to spend the day. A one-hour train ride south of Paris, the walk from the station is 10 minutes to the cathedral and bustling town. It's hard to miss - the two towers of the cathedral soar above the town. Explore the wealth of history, from the architectural wonder of the flying buttresses... to the mysteries of the cosmos embedded in stone. You'll discover not just the cathedral but the town itself and the people who live here are proud keepers of their inheritance. Feel a part of the vibe here; from the Saturday market to boutique shops, the good eats from brasseries to fine dining – and if you time it right, you may well stumble upon some special event the city itself is sponsoring at or around the c

The Best of Edinburgh: A 3-Day Journey from Tourist to Local

Welcome to Edinburgh—Auld Reekie, the Athens of the North, the City Built on Top of Seven Hills! It’s the birthplace of economics and Harry Potter; the summer hangout of the Queen; the home of the Stone of Destiny, Dolly the Sheep, and deep-fried Mars bars. Edinburgh is a bona fide gem: it encapsulates Scotland's progressive past, presents world class art and entertainment, and offers a glimpse at the nation’s rugged landscapes (bonus: best enjoyed from extinct volcanoes that loom over the city's horizon). Working as a certified historical guide in Edinburgh's Old Town, it is my privilege and pleasure to share a true local's experience and make each visitor feel at home in the royal heart of Scotland. Tips: Pack warm clothes and comfortable shoes (public transportation is not necessary to explore one of the most compact and walking-friendly cities in Europe), a raincoat (the rumors are true, though rainstorms tend to be brief showers with rainbows often following suit; it's also a windy city, so save your umbrella), and a camera (whether you're an expert or a novice, the frequently changing light—and weather—offers exceptional photographic opportunities). This itinerary is designed to help you make the absolute most out of your time in Edinburgh. Using a local’s perspective means you save money where you can—“free” is a word used frequently in this guide—so you can indulge where you should. You’ll be invited to high tea at the swankiest hotel in town, and then feast your eyes on breathtaking views overlooking Salisbury crags—and that’s just one afternoon. If you're keen to enjoy famous art, live music, dynamic history, tasty food, quirky tales, and hillside hikes then this is the guide is for you! Join me on a three-day tour that captures Edinburgh's best, by day and by night, and beckons you to explore the mysterious treasures tucked away in its nooks in crannies—where the magic awaits.

Here's an overview of what you will do: Day 1 begins with one of the best bushwalks in the Blue Mountains. It is a fairly strenuous walk toward the end, but nobody ever comes out regretting it. Breathtaking views of cliff faces, waterfalls and valleys makes it more than worth it. Next, you will head to the village centre, Wentworth Falls, for a taste of some local favourites in the area before heading to Leura, the next village down, to explore the unique stores with high quality arts and crafts in a picturesque historical town of rustic charm. This part of the itinerary provides a good reflection of the creative scene that makes the Blue Mountains so inspiring. Dinner at another local favourite will give you a taste, if you're lucky, of the talented

The Two Worlds of Kaohsiung in 5 Days

Kaohsiung is a city that takes its time in showing its true colors. It can be intimidating, with everything in an unreadable language and a seemingly fasted-paced nature. For those who are just passing through, I am hoping to give you a glimpse of the city I've fallen in love with. This itinerary will show you the two worlds Kaohsiung has to offer. I'll take you to the northern areas with the big shopping malls. Where the sidewalks are clean and everything is new. I'll show you the Love River, a staple of the modern day city that has reinvented itself from the grimy, polluted mess it once was. And then I will show you the traditional city that has kept its customs and charms during both Japanese and Chinese occupation. We will start in the Wharf area, the first part of the city that was settled hundred of years ago. We'll venture to Cijin Island, an old fishing village that is a perfect bike trip. I will even take you out of the city, to the largest Buddhist Temple in Taiwan that houses a statue of Buddha over 40m tall. We will go hiking through Kaohsiung's Monkey Mountain as well as multiple night markets. And we will bike through the Art Pier, where creativity is at no loss. I will take you to all my favorite places throughout Kaohsiung by bike, taxi, bus, and on foot. All you need is a bit of patience, an adventurous spirit and perhaps a Chinese/English dictionary to make the journey easier. Enjoy the city and happy adventuring!

Two Amazing Days in St. Croix, USVI - Hello Cruisers!

Cruisers, young couples, and families alike will truly enjoy a visit to the amazing island of St. Croix, the largest of the Virgin Islands in the U.S. territory that is entirely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea! The island is just 28 miles by 7 miles and the territory's capital, Charlotte Amalie, is actually located on another island, St. Thomas. NOTE: I was thrilled to capture this amazing scene of the rainbow over St. Croix. Visit the islands second largest city of Frederiksted, "Freedom City", and travel the short distance to the islands largest city of Christiansted or vice versa! It is approximately a 30-minute car or taxi ride between the two cities. If you choose to rent a car, be aware, they do drive on the left side of the road and you will need to find parking, but if you take a taxi you get dropped off at the most central area of either city. Both cities have much to offer, with a variety of historic sites, nature activities, water sports, horseback riding, scuba diving and snorkeling, and lets not forget the food and shopping! This itinerary will focus on the two cities of Frederiksted and Christiansted, over a two-day period. If you are a cruiser, your port will be in Frederiksted and you can use one day of this itinerary to guide you through this sleepy town, or take the public bus and use the other half of this itinerary and spend the day in Christiansted before you head out for your next port!

Washington, DC: 3 Days Like a Local

If you are researching a trip to the Nation's Capital, you are likely overwhelmed by the lists of activities and places both free or paid to partake in during your trip. This itinerary is filled with the best of DC's most iconic attractions as well as under visited local neighborhoods. You will walk the hill in Georgetown and see the canal that supplied all of DC's building materials. You will eat at the places locals favor and see not only the National Mall and Smithsonians but galleries of DC artists and boutiques of DC locals. Being directed by a local, you will find yourself outside of the tourist district and feeling at home in DC. I have included many free activities that allow you to get a feel for the city, its history, and the present day culture while spending less to do so. Throughout this itinerary, I give you (many) alternatives to most activities so you can choose what best fits your time, budget, energy, and interests. It is like you are getting two itineraries for the price of one! So if option one isn’t your style, you can mix and match the activities to build the perfect trip for you. The itinerary is friendly for both families and the young solo traveler because it includes art, food, cultural activities, fun museums, and of course a detailed map and tour of the national monuments. I also include many activities in the Appendix that I love in the city but couldn’t fit in the course of a normal day, you may add some of them if you are an early riser or prefer to stay up late. This trip is heavy on the walking as most trips in DC will be because the city is so small in comparison to other big cities, only 10 miles by 10 miles make up the whole district proper but you can always rent bikes in most neighborhoods or at Union Station to make it easier or quicker to see what you want to see. I give you detailed maps and walking directions throughout as well as metro and bus routes but if you prefer taxis you can also use the maps I provide with the cars,

Wichita From Cowtown to Air Capital in 2 Days

This guide was designed to help visitors explore both Wichita's unusual past and the modern city it has become. There is so much to do in Wichita, including over 33 museums, 28 art galleries, 22 attractions, 22 live theaters, 17 festivals, and 8 shopping districts. It can be very difficult for visitors to decide what to see. This guide will take you to some of Wichitans favorite activities and restaurants. I would recommend that due to the distances involved persons with either their own car or a rental would find this itinerary useful. Wichita is the largest city in Kansas and you will find all the choices here that you would find in any large sized city. Most of the attractions listed here in the itinerary are family friendly. You may want to arrange for a sitter or substitute some other activity for the night as neither the Old Town district or the casino is family friendly. Don't worry though you will find many movie theaters and other family oriented activities available. We even have roller skating and ice skating available. If you do choose the movies, check out the Warren group. They are all art deco and offer many fun choices such as 3-D and IMAX. There's even one that specializes in second run movies at a very low price. You will find a lot of interesting and off the beaten track advice in this itinerary. It starts with a visit to the Old Cowtown museum. This is an interactive museum that brings the old and often lawless days of early Wichita to life. It will help you better understand the pioneer heritage of Wichita. You will get a chance to see for yourself how the early days of aviation helped us build the city we became. You will get to experience one of our earliest fast food restaurants. The Nu-Way was up and running long before the term fast food was coined. You will also find out which unique stores to visit in both the Delano district and in the Old Town district. Finally when it's all over, you'll be invited to relax and have some fun at the casi

Updated May 2018 One of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, colonial San Cristobal de las Casas sits in a wide valley of the forested Central Highlands in the southern state of Chiapas. About five hours away is Palenque, an enormous, ancient Mayan city where you can climb tall pyramids and wander down jungle paths while streams bubble and howler monkeys howl. A visit to Chiapas shows you an exotic side of Mexico full of friendly people and lovely landscapes. Forget a package tour, and dismiss your worries about security—traveling here is safe and easy on your own, even if you don't speak Spanish. What does your Chiapas itinerary include?
